Welcome to the mountains! Whether you’re staying at Freedom Finder, Memory Maker, or Helen Waldhaus, these are places we recommend when you want to get out, try something different, and enjoy more of North Georgia. From dinner favorites to chocolate tastings and a historic cemetery full of stories, here’s our personal guide to planning your days.

Our Favorite Places to Eat

Our favorite spots in Helen and beyond

Exceptional Dinners Worth the Short Drive

  • Bleu Canoe (Clarkesville): A local favorite nestled in a relaxed mountain clearing, serving incredible, scratch-made Cajun cuisine. Start with the rich Gumbo Ya-Ya, enjoy the Mahi Thibodaux for your entrée, and absolutely save room for their decadent, flourless Chocolate Torte for dessert.

  • Max’s Lakeside (Lake Rabun): Perfect for a scenic drive and a beautiful lunch or dinner by the water. We highly recommend starting downstairs at their unique Swing Bar, where you can enjoy a cocktail from a swinging seat and take your drink upstairs to the main dining room. Their Skillet Roasted Shrimp, Bianca Pizza, and Shrimp Scampi are all excellent choices.

Great Meals Right in Town

  • Nacoochee Grill: The perfect spot in town for a premium, high-quality meal. Start your dinner with their perfectly executed Fried Green Tomatoes, and follow it up with their signature Filet and fresh broccoli.

  • Hoochee’s River Basket: Located right on the waterfront, this is our favorite go-to for a midday meal. If you are heading in for lunch, their famous Buddha Burger is an absolute must-try.

  • The “Helen n Back” Food Tour (Weekend Only): If you are here on a weekend, booking this tour is a fantastic way to experience several different local kitchens while socializing with other travelers. You will get to sample a massive, amazing spread at Bodensee—the perfect opportunity to taste traditional German food and see exactly what you like before ordering off a standard menu!

Coffee & Local Finds

Places worth slowing down for.

  • Jumping Goats Coffee (Cleveland): For your morning caffeine fix, this local coffee shop offers spectacular views of the soaring granite face of Mount Yonah.

  • Sweetwater Coffeehouse (Sautee): A quaint local coffeehouse located in the historic Sautee Nacoochee valley. They offer wonderful indoor and outdoor seating to relax, chat, and enjoy a slow morning.

  • Mark of the Potter (Clarkesville): A unique destination housed in a historic mill right on the picturesque Soque River. Browse exceptional local pottery, see the waterfall beneath the old mill, and buy fish food to feed the massive trout waiting in the rushing river current below the deck.

  • Nora Mill Granary (Sautee): An authentic, operational grist mill established in 1876. Stop by their mill shop to stock up on their famous biscuit and pancake mixes to take a taste of the mountains home with you.

Fun Local Activities

Try something a little different.

  • Chattahoochee Stables (Sautee): Operating since 1987, they offer guided trail rides across beautiful valley land. The highlight of the one-hour ride is following the Chattahoochee River and splashing through the water on horseback—a memorable way to experience the valley.

  • North Georgia Zoo & Wildlife Encounters: A fun outing for families and animal lovers. Their interactive wildlife experiences offer opportunities to meet animals up close and learn about them. Explore the available encounters and reserve your favorites before your visit.

  • The Capyfriends Cafe: This sister property of North Georgia Zoo offers a separate, up-close experience with capybaras. Book an encounter with these gentle animals for something a little different during your mountain getaway.

Unexpected Finds in Clarkesville

Chocolate, local history, and a few surprises

  • Chocolate Midge Kitchen & Tasting Room: This was a recent discovery that quickly earned a place in our guide. Sample chocolate made with cacao from places such as Belize, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, and discover just how different each origin can taste. Browse cocoa, chocolate bars, and shortbread finished with beautiful chocolate decorations—or plan a tasting experience for your group. You can even bring your own wine and get help pairing it with chocolate. It’s an especially fun idea for a friends’ getaway or an afternoon trying something new.

  • Old Clarkesville Cemetery: Right beside Chocolate Midge, this historic cemetery is worth a stroll if you enjoy local history and unexpected stories. Scan the tour’s QR code with your smartphone and explore at your own pace. Discover the notorious Moses Harshaw, often called “the meanest man in Georgia,” and the story of local attorney Calvin Hanks, whose murder shook Clarkesville in 1834. If you’ve visited Tallulah Gorge, look for the story of Reverend Hugh Hawthorne, too. The people buried here offer a fascinating—and sometimes unsettling—glimpse into the area’s past.

Pair the two stops for an afternoon of chocolate tasting and local history, away from the usual tourist route.
